Simple Tips on Finding the Stud in a Wall

Planning to beautify your interior by hanging art and photos? Before doing so, it’s important to understand that not all walls are created the same. Plaster or drywall surfaces, for instance, are not strong enough to support much weight.

Simple Tips on Finding the Stud in a Wall

If you’re planning to hang your decorations on these type of walls without the risk of damage, you need to secure your mounting hardware to one of the studs, or one of the support beams behind the wall’s surface. You can quickly find the right spots by using an electronic device called a stud finder, but if you don’t have one, there’s no need to worry. Handyman Connection® of San Mateo shares low-tech ways to locate studs on your wall:

Use Your Flashlight

A good way to start is to simply use your flashlight. Shine it at a steep angle against the wall, then search for bumps on the surface. These inconsistencies are usually caused by nails that connect your walls to the studs.

Take Measurements

If you have located the first stud, measure 16 inches from it to estimate the location of the next one. Look for similar indications of a stud on that area. You can also knock on the wall. If there is a solid sound, then you have found another stud. If there’s a hollow sound, try measuring 24 inches from the first stud and examine the area.

Check the Baseboard

Inspect your baseboard for nails or outlets. Since the baseboard is usually attached to the studs, this is an easy way locate them. Outlets are also secured to the sides of the studs, so these should cue you in.

Use a Nail

If you think you have found a stud, drive a small nail into the wall. If it doesn’t hit wood under the drywall or plaster, pull it out and put a wire hanger into the hole. Spin it a little, and if you’re searching in the right place, it will hit the stud.
