How to Repair a Leaking Faucet

A dripping faucet may not seem that important, but the water it wastes can add up. Fortunately, you can fix almost any drippy single-lever kitchen faucet in about an hour. Even for a plumbing novice, this job is a lot easier than you might think. Handyman Connection of San Mateo shows you how:

Repair a Leaking Faucet

Basic Faucet Repair

For any faucet repair job, the first thing to do is to find where the water is coming from because leaks from the base of the spout require a different repair than a drip from the end of the spout. Second, you need to turn off the water supply. Next, carefully disassemble the faucet. Pay close attention to the order and orientation of the parts as you remove them. If you find any defective parts, take the old parts to a store and replace them, then simply re-assemble it when you get back.

Fixing Specific Faucet Types

For specific types, such as a rotary ball, you can buy them from your local hardware store. When shopping, we recommend buying a kit that has the ball, O-rings for the spout, seats, springs and a small repair tool. If the leaks are coming from the base of the handle, you can fix the leak by removing the handle and tightening the adjusting ring. If it drips from the end of the spout then you need to replace the seats and springs.

On the other hand, for cartridge types, you can take defective cartridges to the home center or hardware store to find a replacement. To fix drips from the spout for this type, remove the cartridge and either replace the O-rings on the cartridge or replace it entirely.

The final type is a ceramic disc valve, which is just another kind of cartridge. Since this valve is so sturdy and reliable, many manufacturers offer a lifetime guarantee on them. If yours are damaged, check if it’s covered by the warranty.
