How to Deal with Popcorn Ceiling

Popcorn ceilings are as charming as they sound, that is until they require cleaning and maintenance. They’re notoriously difficult to clean due to the unique composition of their surface, and they catch dust more easily than other ceiling types. Want to switch to a new ceiling type without actually buying one? Handyman Connection of San Mateo discusses how to properly deal with stucco or popcorn ceilings.

Popcorn Ceiling

Scrape Method

The tried and tested method of dealing with a popcorn ceiling is to simply scrape the abrasive surface off. To do this, you’ll need a 4-inch utility knife. A drywall knife works, too. Simply scrape off the abrasive protrusions using the knife.

Once you’re done, we suggest applying a thin layer of joint compound to smooth out the imperfections. Finally, just sand the surface to smooth it out before applying the new paint.

Drywall Cover

Another way to deal with a popcorn ceiling is to simply cover up the wall with drywall. We recommend using a ceiling-grade gypsum board since it weighs less than your standard wall board. Simply screw it into the framing and you’re done. This is the better method if your home is old enough to have lead or asbestos in its ceiling, since scraping the surface might free the harmful substance.

Skim Coating

Finally, you can simply skim coat a new texture on the popcorn ceiling. Stuco is considered a texture, after all. If this is what you want to do, you need to clean and prepare the existing ceiling substrate with a quick setting drywall mod. Apply a joint compound or any bonding agent, then apply the new finish compound with your knife or trowel to create the new texture.

This method is actually a bit complex to do, so we suggest you have our professional team do it for you. We’ll make sure your new ceiling texture is applied professionally so that it looks good and lasts for a very long time.
