How to Properly Clean Your Sink and Disposal

You might think that your kitchen sink is one of the cleanest parts of your kitchen space, but just letting water flow through its surface isn’t going to make it clean. There’s also your garbage disposal to consider. Learn how to properly clean your kitchen sink and garbage disposal with Handyman Connection of Rockville.

Cleaning the Sink

First, thoroughly rinse out your sink. Make sure to let the water wash away the trace amounts of food and liquids on the surface. For stainless steel sinks, make sure to clean acidic and salty traces of liquids and foods to avoid pitting.

Next, you’ll want to sprinkle baking soda on the surface of the sink. Work it into a paste and then rinse it well once it settles. Then soak some paper towels with white vinegar and line them on the sink. Let the towels sit for around 20 minutes, then dispose of them. After that, rinse the surface thoroughly with warm, soapy water.

For your faucets and handles, simply wipe them with a soapy solution and use your old toothbrush to scrub the hard to reach places. Place a rag soaked in white vinegar in areas with stains and then rinse it thoroughly.

Cleaning the Garbage Disposal

Start by sprinkling a half cup of baking soda down the disposal, followed by one cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture fizz for a while. While this happens, boil a kettle of water. Once the fizzling sound stops, pour the boiling water down the drain.

Next, you’ll want to fill the drain with two cups of ice followed by a cup of sea salt. Any coarse salt will actually do.  Then, you’ll want to run the cold water and then turn on the garbage disposal until the ice is gone. Doing this loosens the grime and debris from the grinding elements.

Finally, cut a lemon or lime and add the fruit halves down the drain while water is ruining. Do this one at a time; once the first fruit half is gone, put the second one in. The fruit and its resulting extract will help deodorize your drain.
