Pros and Cons of Using Marble in Your Home Renovation

There is no denying it; marble is having a real moment in home design.  Marble is being used in home renovations across the country in a myriad of different architectural and décor aesthetics.

There is no denying it; marble is having a real moment in home design.  Marble is being used in home renovations across the country in a myriad of different architectural and décor aesthetics.  It is incredibly popular and beautiful, but – is it practical?  Marble can be used on countertops and flooring, in bathrooms on the floors and walls, and more.  So, is it right for your home renovation?  Below we explore the pros and cons of using marble in your home renovation.

  • PRO: Beautiful
    • Marble is a natural stone that comes in a variety of colors and textures. It makes an incredibly beautiful addition to any remodel and will elevate the aesthetic of any space in which it is used.  Marble screams elegance and sophistication and integrates well into a wide variety of décor and architectural aesthetics.  When you invest in marble you know that it is a timeless and classic investment that will never go out of style.
  • CON: Scratching & Staining
    • One of the biggest drawbacks to using marble is that it is notorious for scratching and staining. This is particularly troublesome for some because of the spaces in which it is most commonly used.  Kitchens and bathrooms see a lot of use and that means that it is at an even higher risk of scratching and staining.  Marble can easily become scratched/stained by things that are acidic (such as a lemon slice on a countertop).  Additionally, if you spill something like wine or fruit on the countertop, it could easily stain your marble.  Some people consider scratching on the marble a natural part of its beauty but you just have to decide if the look is something that you prefer.
  • PRO: Cost-Effective
    • Many people assume that because of marble’s beauty and elegance that it is an incredibly addition to make but it is actually very cost-effective. This depends on the type of marble you purchase for your home but Carrera marble is actually one of the least expensive natural stone additions you can make to your home.
  • CON: High Maintenance
    • Because marble is a soft stone that stains and scratches easily, it requires a lot of maintenance to retain its beautiful appearance. Your marble needs to be professionally sealed upon installation to help protect the surface from staining and scratching.  Additionally, the sealant will need to be reapplied to the surface every 6 – 12 months to maintain the strength of protection for your new marble surface.
