Low flow appliances, as you can probably imagine, use significantly less water than traditional appliances.  Low flow appliances include things like toilets, faucets and shower heads and are a relatively easy switch to make. Many parts of the United States, and the world, are experiencing a drought, so any amount of water savings is helpful. Not only are they more eco-friendly, they will reduce the amount of water that you use and generate significant savings on your monthly utility bills.  Just how much less water does the average low flow toilet use?  Do It Yourself explains just how significant the reduction in water use can be, “Wondering what’s the deal with these special toilets? For starters, they are known for using much less water than traditional kinds. Standard versions can use up to 6 gallons of water per flush. After all, toilets make up the largest percentage (30%) of indoor water use. According to the American Water Works Association, this equals out to a whopping 20.1 gallons of water per person per day.”

Though there is an upfront investment, if you plan to make energy efficient improvements to your home or are renovating, it is a great idea to invest in low flow appliances.  And, while you will certainly save money on your water bill, it is important that you not forget you will also save more on your energy bill.  This is achieved because you use a lot less hot water, thus saving on water heating costs. In addition to toilets, when you install a low flow shower head, there are two types from which to choose: laminar-flow and aerating.  Laminar-flow creates streams of water and has a better ability to control temperature.  Aerating low flow shower heads mix water with air and create a mist.  Further, when you install a low flow faucet or an aerator on your faucet, it is a relatively inexpensive and easy change that will certainly reduce water usage and save money.  There are many stylish styles when it comes to low-flow options.  By making the change, you can save gallons of water each time you use the shower, faucet, or toilet!  Those gallons add up, day after day, to quickly provide a return on your investment.  And, should you ever decide to move, the upgrade adds value to your home and will your energy efficient choices will impress potential home buyers.
