How to Choose Home Flooring

There are many different types of home flooring, and you need to make sure you pick the right flooring for your home.

When you purchase a home that needs some work, or undertake a big remodel project, one of the most exciting decisions to make is what type of flooring you will install.  You will most likely vary the flooring throughout the home depending on the room you are in and the needs specifically related to those rooms.  But, even within a specific room, like the kitchen, there are a variety of choices from which you can make a selection.  So, how do you choose?  Below we offer some helpful tips on selecting flooring for your home.

Tips for Choosing Home Flooring:

  1. Choose a Decor Design For The Home First
    • Is your home decor modern, traditional, transitional or something else entirely?  Before you choose your flooring it is best to know what direction you are headed with your home decor so that the two do not completely clash.  Your home decor plan will influence the type of flooring, color of flooring, installation and more.  Once you have a general direction for your home decor and a sense for your personal preferences and tastes, you will have a much clearer direction for the type of flooring you would like to install.
  2. Budget, Budget, Budget
    • It will be nearly impossible to proceed with selecting flooring if you have not yet set a budget.  There is an incredibly vast range pricing when it comes to home flooring options.  If you are working on a very small budget, you probably will not be able to install high-end wood flooring throughout your entire home but will be able to select from a variety of different options that do work with your budget.  If you have a fairly large budget, you will have a bigger selection of different flooring materials and finishes, making it very important to have a predetermined budget when shopping for flooring.
  3. Consider Lifestyle
    • You may love the feel of carpet under your feet, but if you have young children or pets, your beautiful new carpet could quickly look stained and dirty.  Choosing the appropriate flooring type for your lifestyle will help extend the life of your flooring and stretch the life of your investment.
  4. Consider The Room
    • For Kitchens:  The kitchen is probably not the place to install wall to wall carpeting.  Any place that will see foot traffic and potential spills or water needs a more durable flooring choice.  Consider options like ceramic tile, wood or linoleum for the kitchen or bathroom because they can stand up to some wear and tear and are more easy to clean.
    • For Bathrooms:  Again, where there is water and moisture, you want to choose a more durable flooring option that will not be destroyed by a spill or two.  Ceramic tile, linoleum, marble, limestone are great choices because not only are they very durable, but they offer versatility.  Between the listed flooring types, there are an enormous amount of options with style, finish, size and installation to make any room unique.
    • Living Areas:  Choosing flooring for the living areas in your home is more about personal preference and budget than anything else.  Because there is less concern of spilling because you are not in a kitchen or bathroom, any style of flooring to meet your decor style will work.  But, this is a reminder to know your lifestyle.  If your small children or pets spend a lot of time in your living areas, you probably need to keep them in mind when choosing flooring.  Carpet is a wonderful choice and if your lifestyle suits it, will make a cozy and stylish addition to your living area.  But if your lifestyle tends to be a little more messy or has more potential for damage, you may consider something like wood flooring, laminate or tile that is more easily cleaned.   You can always add a nice area rug to make the room more cozy and your investment in your installed flooring will be protected.
