How to Find Plumbing Leaks Around Your Home

An undetected leak can waste significant amounts of money given enough time. Fortunately, there are simple and effective ways to check for leaks around your home. Handyman Connection® of Mountain View explains how to check for leaks and discusses a few ways to fix them:

Plumbing Leaks

Checking Your Home for Leaks

Checking your water meter is one of the best ways to determine if you have a leak in your plumbing system. First, make sure that there is no water being used outside or inside your home. Then find your water meter and check the leak indicator to see if it’s showing any movement. You can also take a water meter reading and wait 1 to 2 hours to take another reading. If the reading has changed even though no water was used, you have a leak.

Now you need to find out if the leak is outside or inside your home. Shut off the water at the main valve, and then check the leak indicator if it’s still running, or use the method of meter reading. If there is no change in the meter readings or if the leak indicator no longer moves, then you have a leak inside the home. If the meter keeps moving, or if the readings are changing, then the leak is outside, between the meter and your home.

Fixing Leaky Faucets and Toilets

You can fix leaking faucets by first checking the status of their rubber washers. Worn rubber washers lead to leaks. Fortunately, washers are easy to replace if you have the right tools. You can fix leaking toilets, on the other hand, by simply replacing the filling mechanism or the toilet flapper. Flapper valves cause leaks when they become worn or cracked.
