What to Do When Your Toilet Won’t Flush

Flushing problems are typically not a big deal. If you can hear the water inside the tank flowing, Handyman Connection of Lincoln shows a simple solution you can do.

The Toilet Tank

While the toilet is idle—that is, currently unoccupied—water continuously flows into the tank and fills it up to a certain point. The water level is monitored by a floating ball that, as soon as it hits a certain mark, automatically shuts off the valve and stops the flow of water. When you pull on the flush handle, it tugs at a flapper covering the drain and the water flows through it and into the main bowl.

Toilet Won’t Flush

Flushing problems are often caused by an unseated flapper. The flapper covering the drain valve can sometimes become dislodged. This happens occasionally after a few uses. Without a cover, the tank never fills and the toilet doesn’t flush. Reseating the flapper is actually simple. The first thing you want to check is if there’s actually water flowing into the tank. If water is flowing, wiggle the flush handle a few times. Sometimes, this is all it takes to shake the flapper back into position.

Reseating the Flapper

If this doesn’t solve the problem, remove the tank cover and take a look inside the tank itself. The flapper is often a round, rubberized seal connected by a chain to the flush handle. If you see that’s it out of position, reseat it carefully back into drain valve. Wait a few minutes to make sure the tank is filling up and then pull on the handle again. Replace the cover, and you’re good to go.
