3 Fall Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

Of the 113.6 million homes in the country, about 87% rely on air conditioners to boost indoor comfort level. In the past, this invention was considered a luxury, but it is now a staple in many residential properties. To preserve your air conditioning unit’s health, Handyman Connection® of Jeffersonville shares some maintenance tips every homeowner should follow this fall.

Remove Accumulated Debris

Before cleaning your air conditioner, turn off power to the unit to avoid the dangers of working around electricity and the moving parts. Remove the fan cage on the exterior condenser or compressor. A screwdriver or a wrench may come handy to remove the fasteners. Lift the cage or fan grill away from the top of the unit. You can then vacuum the leaves and other debris from the interior.

Wash and Straighten the Fins

Remove and brush the outer covers of your air conditioning unit to eliminate dirt. You can use a garden hose to spray through the fins from the inside out. Remember that a gentle stream is enough to wash the covers. After cleaning, look for bent fins. Use a butter knife or commercially available fin-straightening tool. This is an important step if you want to maintain your air conditioner’s energy efficiency. Carefully straighten the fins to avoid damaging the tubing embedded within them.

Clean the Evaporator Coil

Look for the evaporator coil door inside the blower or furnace unit. You may have to remove some foil duct tape and take out a few screws or bolts. Use a soft brush to dust off the coil and then spray with no-rinse cleaner, which will eventually foam and drip into the drain pan.
