Tiles are beautiful and generally easy to clean, but grout is another story entirely. Grout lines easily attract dirt and grime and they are tricky to keep clean because grout is porous. Dirty grout can detract from the beautiful appearance of your tile, so it’s important that you deal with this problem as soon as you can. Handyman Connection of Jeffersonville, the trusted home maintenance expert, explains how you can clean grout:
Step 1 – Gather all the materials that you will need. This includes a wet cloth, water, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar, baking soda, grout brush or old tooth brush, mixing bowl, and grout sealer. Then you need to prep the work area by wiping down the tile with the wet cloth. Make sure to remove any visible dirt, dust, or grime. Take the time to clean any build-ups or stains as well.
Step 2 – Next, you’ll have to mix a cleaning solution. The exact mix you will use will depend on the state of your tile grout. For general cleaning, you can mix one part water with two parts baking soda. For discoloured or stained grout, you can mix two parts baking soda together with one part vinegar. If you have fragile or course tiles, then you need to mix one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts baking soda.
Step 3 – Now it’s time to clean the grout. Apply the solution using an old toothbrush or grout brush. If you are using a vinegar solution, then don’t forget to apply a small amount of paste to an inconspicuous area to check if the vinegar will stain the tile. Let the paste sit for a few minutes, then scrub all of the grout lines. For better results, you can use an old electric toothbrush to scrub. Rinse the grout lines clean with water, then apply grout sealer to keep your grout in good condition.
After cleaning your grout, you can keep it looking great by spraying it with vinegar and wiping it down once a week. If you opt to renew your existing grout, you can also use grout sealer 10-14 days after the grout cures to prevent the grout from collecting grime.
