How to Improve Air Circulation In Your Home

Proper air circulation is essential to keeping your family comfortable and healthy. Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie shares expert tips on how you can improve air circulation in your home.

Why Is Proper Air Circulation Important?

Your home needs proper ventilation to flush out smells, indoor air pollutants and excess moisture. Fewer air pollutants equate to a reduced risk of asthma, allergies and clogged sinuses. Balanced indoor moisture levels mean more comfortable living spaces, a lower chance of mold and mildew growth, and less condensation on windows. Proper air circulation also makes your heating and cooling systems more efficient as it helps distribute conditioned air throughout the room.

The following are the ways that you can improve air circulation and facilitate ventilation in your home:

Open the Windows

Opening the windows for at least 15 minutes a day flushes out stale air. You will need two open windows in a room to facilitate air flow: one acts as the release vent and the other as the intake vent. Use your window screens to prevent dust, pollen and small insects from getting inside. For small rooms, open both sashes of a double-hung window to create two openings.

Run Ceiling and Standalone Fans

Your ceiling and standalone fans complement your HVAC system as we described above. Ceiling fans are ideal for heating systems since heat tends to rise. It helps create an evenly heated room, which helps reduce the required heating output, potentially resulting in energy savings.

Install an Attic Ventilation System

Air circulation is also important to your roof’s health. An improperly ventilated attic can trap heat and moisture within, which causes damage to the roofing structure and may result in costly roof repairs. While most roofing systems have ridge vents and soffits to allow air circulation, it may not be enough. We recommend installing solar-powered exhaust fans to bolster attic ventilation. They help flush out hot and moist air from the attic and don’t place a burden on your energy consumption. Also, have attic insulation issues addressed to further avoid related roofing problems.
