5 Tips for an Environment-Friendly Lifestyle

Living a greener life means conserving and preserving the earth’s natural resources. A green lifestyle involves making choices that achieve the goals of green living. Handyman Connection® shares five ways to live a greener life and how they will benefit you.

1. Turn Down the Heat

Use less energy for your home to reduce your environmental impact. Turn your thermostat down in the winter, and wash your clothes in cold rather than hot water. These will also reduce carbon emission along with your energy bills.

2. Reuse and Recycle Common Household Products

Search your home for products you no longer need. Instead of throwing them away, try donating them, recycling them or selling them in a garage sale so that someone else can use them. When you recycle materials, there is less pressure to secure new ones. If we reuse and rebuild every bit of used material, we won’t need landfills.

3. Use Less Paper

The paper you use comes from felled trees. The paper industry also uses fuel and water, which go to waste every time you throw away your old papers. Go for as many paperless options as you can, including electronic media and online bill payment. Use recycled paper as well as cotton napkins and towels instead of paper towels.

4. Turn Off All Electronics Before Bed

If they stay plugged in, electronic devices can still draw power even when turned off. Before you go to bed, unplug or switch off their power source. This will prevent wastage from standby or “phantom draw.”

5. Ride Greener Rides

American automobiles, buses and trains are not as efficient on fuel as they should be. We could save thousands of dollars every year if we drove more fuel-efficient cars. Better still, consider vehicles that don’t have emissions at all, such as bicycles. You get to help the environment and stay healthy along the way.
