5 Steps to Help You Organize Your Closet

Is your closet constantly a mess? You’re not alone. It’s one of the most cluttered parts of any home as items and clothes can pile up and clutter begins to accumulate. If you’re looking to re-organize your closet or if you want to be proactive, our crew at Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie has put together a couple of steps to help you organize your closet, and help keep it that way.

1: Clear It Out

Start by dedicating a few hours (or more depending on how much clutter is in your closet) to remove and clear everything out. It’s almost impossible to effectively organize your closet without starting from scratch. Define an area such as a bedroom or sitting room to empty out your closet. Don’t forget the nooks and crannies that may have been stuffed with random items throughout the years. (Maybe you’ll even find a $20 laying around.)

2: Create Categories

After you’ve completely cleared out your closet and/or as you are doing so, categorize each item in organized piles. Create different piles for clothes, you can even get as specific as clothes dedicated for various seasons, shoes, magazines, towels, and etc.

3: Clean Sweep

After you’ve created your categorized piles, go through each pile and get rid of the things you no longer use or wear. A good rule of thumb to go by is to throw out or donate any clothes that you haven’t worn in the last year. This gives each season’s selection a chance, but it’s a good indication for what you’d be comfortable throwing out. You can also create a consignment pile and try to get a little money out of your cleaning. For other items, use your judgment to determine what you can get rid of, throw out, or re-organize somewhere else.

4: Deep Clean the Inside

Capitalize on the time that your closet is completely empty and use it as an opportunity to do a deep clean to the inside. Be sure to get rid of any dust, dirt, or grime. Vacuum the space out if you can as well. You may find dust bunnies, tags, wrappers, and etc. so be sure to have a garbage bag ready. Wipe down the walls too as dust can stick on the closet walls.

5: Refill

Now that you might have gotten rid of a large amount of the clutter and reduced the amount of clothes going in your closet, refill the space in an extremely organized fashion. Some people like to sort clothes by color, or by utilizing storage bins, the addition of shelves, and more. The great part about it is that it’s your closet, so you can do whatever you want that makes you the most comfortable for your daily routine.
