Planning a Basement Remodel? Here’s What You Need to Know

Finishing your basement is a great investment. Apart from increasing the overall value of your property, you’re also creating extra usable space for your home, either for storage or as additional living space.

Before you start your basement remodel, however, there are a few things you need to know. Handyman Connection® of Chicago Central discusses more below.

Address Water Issues

Before anything else, make sure your basement is dry. Water issues in the basement are no joke as they can affect the comfort levels and the actual performance of your newly furnished space. Check for cracks in the foundation and the floor, and address them before you begin any remodeling endeavor.

Keep in Mind the Fasteners

Unlike your first and second floors, basement floors and walls are typically made of masonry, cement or a combination of the two. As such, regular nails and screws won’t work when it’s time to build the framing for your basement. Depending on the wall type, you’ll need to get the proper fastener or anchors to secure it.

Install a Vapor Barrier

Even after addressing existing moisture problems, your basement space would still naturally accumulate moisture. As such, it’s important that you install a vapor barrier on the walls and floors before you add the framing. This gives your newly installed framing much-needed protection from moisture and leaks.

Finally, don’t forget insulation. This is especially important if you plan to use this space as another living space or room. Insulation also acts as an extra layer of moisture control for your basement, which is vital in colder months.
