Popcorn ceiling is a slang term used to mean what was once known as acoustic ceiling or what is now also called a stucco ceiling. Many people also call it cottage cheese ceiling. This textured ceiling is a paint-on or a spray-on ceiling treatment that used to be standard for bedrooms and other parts of many homes in the U.S.
Popcorn ceilings are mostly considered to be an unfortunate addition to some older homes. They look outdated and unfashionable, and they are difficult to clean and repair. Fortunately, there are many effective ways to fix or remove them from a room completely. Handyman Connection of Chicago Central explains these methods:
- Cover Up the Popcorn Ceiling With Drywall – We recommend this method if you suspect that your popcorn ceiling may have have asbestos or lead paint. Compared with other methods, covering up the popcorn ceiling with drywall also leads to the smoothest possible result. Affix ceiling-grade gypsum board over the popcorn ceiling, and then screw the board into the framing. If you are skilled with mudding and taping, you will get a seamless result.
- Skim Coat With Plaster – This approach is perfect for homeowners who want to maintain the historical appearance of their home, but don’t want a popcorn ceiling. This method involves preparing and cleaning the existing substrate by mudding it with quick-set drywall and then applying joint compound as a bonding agent. To apply a finish compound and create a new texture for your ceiling, use a knife or a trowel.
- Scrape the Popcorn Ceiling – You should only try this method if you’ve contacted professionals, and they determined that your popcorn ceiling has no lead paint or asbestos. Use a four-inch utility or drywall knife to chip away at the popcorn ceiling. Your goal is to create a smooth surface. If there are any imperfections, skim the affected area with a thin layer of joint compound, and then sand the area smooth. Repaint the ceiling after.
