How to Caulk Like a Professional

Although caulking seems like an easy enough job to do, it’s one of the more deceptively difficult home improvement tasks out there. Accuracy and a steady hand are essential for this kind of job. Handyman Connection of Chicago Central gives a few pointers on how you can do a caulking project just like a professional.

Caulk Like a Professional

Before anything else, you need a few materials. The ubiquitous caulk and caulk gun should be the first things on your list, along with your trusty retractable razor blade and painter’s tape. Have some rubbing alcohol handy if you’re using silicone caulk as well as some small cotton rags.

Next, you should decide what kind of caulk you’ll be using for the job. There are three types to choose from: latex, silicone and butyl rubber. As a general rule, vinyl latex caulk is ideal for dry areas while silicone fares better in wetter environments. Finally, butyl rubber should always be used when doing exterior caulking.

Removing and Cleaning

Start by removing the old caulk using your retractable razor blade. Scrape the surface clean. Ensure that no debris is left behind so that the newly applied caulk doesn’t have trouble setting. Before applying the caulk, make sure to put a strip of the blue painter’s tape where you want the caulk to stop. This little trick will help you prevent overfilling the caulk lines.

Applying the Caulk

When you’re applying the caulk, make sure you do it at a 45-degree angle. Squeeze enough of the caulk to completely fill in the joint. Work at a slow and consistent pace to make applying the caulk easier.

Smoothing the Joint

Once you’re done applying caulk, all you need to do is smooth out the joint. Since you used tape around the edges, the caulk won’t spill or smear, so you can smooth without any risks. Once you’re done smoothing out the caulk, all you have to do is remove the tape. Make sure you pull it away from the joint and not toward it.
