3 Ways to Remove Spray Paint From Metal

Spray paint is an excellent product to use to transform almost anything. It comes in a variety of colors and finishes, and its spray application makes it perfect for unusually shaped pieces like hardware. If you want to replace the color or prefer the natural metal finish underneath, you need to remove the existing one first. Handyman Connection® of Chicago Central shares three simple ways to do so:

Spray Paint

Use a Slow Cooker

If you accidentally spilled paint onto your metal switch plates or a door handle, don’t worry. Just carefully remove the item and its screws, and put them in a crockpot. Cover this with water, add at least two tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent, and “cook” on low overnight. This will allow you to brush the paint off easily with a toothbrush. Be sure you work quickly as the paint will harden fast once removed from the cooker.

Boil in a Baking Soda Mixture

Fill an unused pot halfway with water, and cover the bottom with baking soda. Put the hardware in the pot, bring it to a boil, and let simmer for at least 30 minutes. After you extract the items from the pot, you’ll be able to peel the paint off effortlessly. We recommend disposing of the pot afterward, so be sure you use one that you no longer want.

Use a Chemical Paint Remover

If you don’t want to go through all that trouble, you can just buy paint removers at the local hardware store. Work in a well-ventilated area, and wear the proper protective gear like rubber gloves, safety goggles and a respirator to shield yourself from the chemicals. Simply apply the remover to the metal according to the directions. Once the paint bubbles up from the surface, chip it off with a paint scraper, and use a scrubbing pad for hard-to-reach places. When done, wipe the surface with a damp rag and wash the metal off with water.
