As the common room in your home, the living room can easily become one of the most cluttered areas in your home. It’s a constant struggle finding room for your stuff, but it’s not impossible to do.
In this post, Handyman Connection® of Chattanooga lists four ways to maximize the space in your living room.
1. Create Living Room Zones
You can increase the visual space of your living room through the smart usage of corners and by creating zones. These corner areas are essentially a small room within the living room dedicated to a certain activity, such as a reading area, play space, or extra storage space.
Your zones must have a corresponding corner. The reading area, for example, should be in a corner that has a window so you can enjoy natural light ideal for reading.
2. Effective Lighting
Speaking of lighting, adding some natural or ample artificial light is an effective way to increase the visual space of your room and make it less cramped and claustrophobic. For natural light, you want to keep your windows unobstructed or replace your old ones with designs that have larger glass areas. Sliding, casement and picture windows are great examples.
3. It’s All About Verticality
The vertical area of any room is one of the most under-utilized space and we recommend taking advantage of it, especially if you feel like you have a smaller room. Your living space has enough room; you just need to look up. Adding a loft to your living room is a great way to add more space if the floor space is all spoken for.
4. Illusion of Space
Sometimes, all it takes to make your living room larger is just tricking your eyes. It’s actually easy to establish this illusion of space. Large windows can do this, but another way to go about it is by placing a large mirror above the sofa. It tricks your eyes and makes the room appear wider than it really is.
