Proper dishwasher cleaning is essential to keeping your dishwasher sanitary and efficient. Dishwashers are constantly used, so they collect a lot of soap residue, gunk and food debris. Handyman Connection® of Chattanooga talks about the proper tools and knowledge you need to complete this task:
Get your tools first. You need a screwdriver or hex wrench, a sponge, baking soda, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a stainless steel cleaner, distilled white vinegar, dish soap and soft rags. Next, run a full dishwasher cycle, and then completely empty the dishwasher. Remove the racks from the dishwasher and check the spinning holes. Use needle nose pliers or your toothpick to open and clear the spinning arm’s holes.
The water can sometimes miss the bottom of the dishwasher door. Wipe the debris from this area and check the grate or grill in the bottom of the dishwasher. This is the place where wastewater accumulates. Use your tools to remove any particles clogging the grate and wash the area with warm soapy water. Remove and disassemble the filter and clean it. Use a soft toothbrush to wash the filter with warm soapy water or baking soda. Reassemble and replace the filter.
Take a piece of cloth soaked in distilled white vinegar and wipe it around the door seal. In addition, soak a toothbrush or Q-tip in vinegar to clean and clear the tiny and tight areas. Next, use a soapy dish brush and clean the utensil rack and wash the bottom and top racks. Put everything together.
To remove hard water deposits, add two cups of vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher and then run an energy-saving cycle. Stop the machine halfway through, then wait 20 minutes. Complete the cycle.
If you have a stainless steel dishwasher, then you can use a stainless steel spray and a microfiber cloth to clean and polish its exterior. For a clean and streak-free finish, use the cleaner on one towel and then dry the dishwasher using a second clean towel. Wipe in the direction of the grain for best results.
Follow these steps and your dishwasher will be clean and operate more efficiently. While you are performing this maintenance task, why not start other home improvement projects as well?
