How to Clean Your Dishwasher

Contrary to popular belief, your dishwasher isn’t inherently clean and doesn’t clean itself when it’s doing the dishes. If you don’t clean out your dishwasher, debris, soap residue and gunk will eventually pile up.

In this post, Handyman Connection of Chattanooga discusses how to clean your dishwasher.

What You Need

First, you’ll want to secure the following:

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Baking soda and dish soap
  • A sponge and soft rags (microfiber rags work best)
  • A toothbrush and a toothpick
  • A stainless steel or multipurpose cleaner

The First Steps

Start by emptying the dishwasher after running a cycle. You’ll want to remove all the racks when you do this so you can check the spinning holes properly. Using your toothpick or some other small pointed tool, remove any debris that has built up in the holes of the spinning arm. Be careful not to scratch them in the process.

Cleaning the Dishwasher

Most dishwashers have a bottom that tends to accumulate debris simply because the water doesn’t reach it. To clean this part, simply wipe it clean with a soft rag, making sure to get rid of any dirt, debris or food stains. Next, check the grille or grate at the bottom of the dishwasher. You’ll usually find some pockets of dirt and food gunk there. Remove any food-based muck to prevent clogging and wash it with warm and soapy water.

Clean-Cycling

Hard water deposits in the dishwasher are difficult to remove with a soft rag or a toothbrush. To remove these and any dirt and debris you may have missed, simple run an empty cycle with vinegar. Add two cups of vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher and then run it.

You’ll want to stop the dishwasher halfway through the cycle and let the vinegar settle for 10 to 20 minutes. This allows you to remove hard-to-clean food particles in the dishwasher.

Finally, clean the utensil rack. Clear away any food residue or stains using a toothbrush lathered with dishwashing soap. Rinse and let it dry before putting it back into the newly cleaned dishwasher.
