5 Ways You Can Avoid Renovation Stress

Remodeling your home is a daunting task. You have to find a good contractor, explain to the children what will happen and make sure everything is in order to avoid impeding the project. Before you know it, you’re incredibly stressed out that you have no idea what to do next. Of course, there are ways to avoid remodeling stress.

In honor of Stress Awareness Month, Handyman Connection® of Carmel discusses the ways you can avoid remodeling stress.

  1. Research Your Contractors – Depending on the project, remodeling and renovations can be DIY’d. However, if you feel like the task is a bit hard to do by yourself and by your own hands, it’s best to hire a contractor instead. Before calling the first contractor you see, you need to do your research. Look for recommendations, interview the contractors, and check their reputation. If you feel your remodeling project is too much for you, Handyman Connection of Carmel can bail you out.

  1. Expect Delays – Renovation isn’t something that can be done in a day or even a month depending on the project, especially if you’re doing it by yourself. Extreme weather may prevent work from going as planned, your city might have strict limitations on when you or contractors can work, or unexpected major repairs may pop up. Whatever the case may be, if you expect the job to be done in three months, it’s best to be prepared and expect it to be done within six months instead.

  1. Plan Your Budget Accordingly – When it comes to remodeling, make sure your budget fits what you want. The remodeling project may be more of a significant expense than you expected. Some additional damage may also pop up when you least expect it. That’s why it’s best that before starting it, you have a rainy day fund tucked away in case of emergencies.

  1. Be Realistic – If you’re DIY-ing a remodeling job, work with what you have. Be realistic with your space, and only remodel accordingly. Otherwise, the entire renovation may go wrong and wind up costing you more than expected.

  1. Avoid Being Overwhelmed – One of the reasons you get stressed during remodeling and renovations is because you feel like everything is happening all at once. Make a list of what you have to do and the questions you want to ask your contractor to ease that feeling. Be honest, and communicate with your contractor as well. Say what you need and don’t need.
