Quick-Fix Tips for a Door That Sticks

One of the primary functions of doors is to provide you with a safe and easy passage to and from different areas of your home. Doors that stick or sag expose you to two risks: being locked out or being locked in. Bearing this in mind, doors that are difficult to open and close compromise your comfort and security. The good news is you don’t have to replace them just yet. This article from your home remodeling experts at Handyman Connection® of Carmel teaches you how to fix doors that stick.

Check Hinge Screws

Years of use can loosen the screws of your doors. Doors that get stuck at the top or drag on the floor are likely a result of loose screws. Tighten screws using a screwdriver instead of a power drill as the latter can overtighten the screws. If the screw holes are already stripped, try using three-inch screws that run through the jamb and into the door frame.

By tightening the screws, you also adjust the hinge to some extent. Doing so will reposition your door, just enough for it not to rub against the jamb. It’s important to know exactly where along the jamb your door drags so you know which screws to tighten.

Fixing Self-Closing Doors

Don’t let doors that close on their own creep you out. It’s more likely a result of the wall or the door itself being out of plumb rather than a supernatural event. You can easily fix doors that close slowly on their own by adjusting the hinges. If your walls are the problem and are out of plumb, you may need to do some major work. In this case, you may have to enlist the help of your preferred home remodeling company.
