Moving to a new home is an exciting part of your life, and it can get too exciting that you forget about the little details during the physical move. In this post, our team from Handyman Connection® of Boise shares the four things you should do before you move into your new home.
1. Replace the Old Locks
More often than not, you’ll be moving into a home that’s had previous homeowners. Since you don’t know who else has the keys to your home, we recommend you change all of the locks in your property so that it’s only you and your family members who have access to your home.
Installing new locks isn’t as pricey as its sounds. You can actually install your new deadbolts and locksets on your own. Just make sure you choose the right ones. Alternatively, you can have an experienced locksmith like us do it for you.
2. Clean the Carpets
Before you bring over your old carpets, make it a point to steam clean them. After all, you don’t want to bring in the bugs from your old property. Professionally cleaning the carpets can be pricier, but it makes your home a cleaner and healthier place in which to live.
3. Check for Plumbing Leaks
Although it’s your home inspector that should be doing this, it never hurts to double-check your new property for some old plumbing leaks. Check for the signs, such as toilets that run even when not in use and leaky or dripping faucets. Make it a point to check the water heater for signs of leaks. You can also check the water meter for leaks. Just make sure no one’s using the water in the house when you do so. If the reading is different, then there’s a leak in your home.
4. Know Where the Circuit Breaker and Main Water Valve Are
Finally, make it a point to introduce yourself to your new property’s main water valve and circuit breaker. The last thing you want is to be at a loss where these are when there’s a critical water or electrical concern. Your home inspector will usually tell you where to find them.
